Christian Braun has regressed statistically since signing a $125 million, five-year extension. Over the last 45 games, he has averaged 11.8 points, shooting 51.4% on 8.6 attempts per game.
These numbers are significantly worse than his breakout campaign in 2024-25, when he averaged 15.4 points and shot 58% on 10.4 attempts.
Christian Braun’s statistical decline is tied to his head coach David Adelman’s basketball philosophy. On April 9, 2026, Adelman told ESPN that his offensive system depends on the roster he is given. He said he wants his team to play at a slower pace because of their best player, Nikola Jokic.
“One player who fits that bill is three-time MVP Nikola Jokic, and his coach agreed with this explanation. We have a person we can play through that allows us to be efficient, especially in the last half of the shot clock,” Nuggets coach David Adelman said. “I do believe in pace with certain rosters. Our roster is not built that way.”
Adelman’s philosophy has led Denver to play at a slower pace during his coaching tenure. Last season, the Denver Nuggets ranked 20th in pace, averaging 99.49 possessions per game.
Furthermore, Denver opened this season with 94 possessions in its first game, ranking last in the league after one game. These possession numbers are significantly lower than they were before Adelman became head coach.
Over the first 79 games of the 2024-25 season under Michael Malone, Denver averaged 100.75 possessions per game. Denver was sixth in the league in pace.
The slower pace led to fewer transition possessions. During the 2024-25 season under Michael Malone, Denver averaged 22.4 possessions per game, 7th in the league. Last season under David, they were 22nd in the category, averaging 18.1 per game.
Transition is Christian Braun’s best offensive skill set, so the slower pace works against him. During his tenure at the University of Kansas, he ranked in the 71st percentile in transition scoring, averaging 1.19 points per possession.
He has continued to excel in transition as a professional. Over his first four seasons, he spent 30% of his offensive possessions in transition, averaging 3.2 per game. He averaged 4.2 points, shooting 63.9% on 1.7 attempts per game.
However, Christian Braun saw a decline in his transition possessions last season. He averaged 3.6 possessions per game, a 27.8% decrease from the 2024-25 season. In 2024-25, he averaged 4.6 possessions per game.
The role shift has led Christian Braun to spend more time shooting from behind the arc. He took 36.8% of his shots from behind the arc last season, averaging 3.3 per game. 84.8% of his threes came via catch-and-shoot, and he averaged 2.8 per game.
He struggled, shooting 31.4%, but that is likely an aberration. Over his first two seasons, he shot 37.3% from three and averaged 1.6 three-point attempts per game. Although I expect him to shoot better from behind the arc, he will not reach his offensive peak under this coaching philosophy.
