Second-year guard Jalen Green stated this week that he wants to accomplish two goals during his third season in the league. Green told the media he wants to become an All-Star and help Houston win more games.
How Jalen Green can become an All-Star next season
However, Jalen Green must change his shot selection to accomplish this goal. Green has been an inefficient offensive player since entering the league. He is shooting 42% on 16.2 attempts per game. Green’s inefficiency is related to his shot selection. He has taken 43.8% of his shots from behind the arc since entering the league averaging 7.1 per game.
Green’s three point shooting
Unfortunately, 3-point shooting has always been the weakest aspect of Green’s skillset. He shot 35 percent during his junior and senior high school seasons on 7 attempts per game. He continued to produce mediocre results in the Under 17 World Cup for Team USA in 2018, as he shot 34.1 percent on 6.3 shots per game.
Green hasn’t been able to improve his 3-point percentage as a professional, shooting 34 percent on 7.1 attempts per game. Even though Jalen Green is still struggling from behind the arc in the NBA, there is more information about the cause of his struggles. Green has struggled with one type of three-point shot, the pull-up three.
For example, Alperen Şengün had the ball near the right elbow midway through the second quarter against the Washington Wizards. Green came from the left wing to initiate the dribble handoff with Şengün. Once Green got the ball, he took two steps toward the basket before changing course and pulling the ball back out to the perimeter.
Green ended the possession by missing a pull-up three. These possessions contributed to Green shooting 33.5% on pull-up threes since entering the league on 3.4 attempts per game. Green has a significantly higher percentage from behind the arc when he isn’t taking pull-up threes.
He has made 35.5% of his catch-and-shoot threes on 3.5 attempts per game. If Jalen can reduce the number of pull-up threes he attempts, his efficiency will improve. He can reduce his pull-up threes with one adjustment, taking more shots at the rim.
Green’s best attribute
According to NBA.com, Green shot 73.8 percent around the rim on 4.1 attempts per game in the G-League. He has continued to excel around the rim as a pro, shooting 60.6 percent on 4.95 shots per game in the restricted area.
Green has shown flashes of executing this game plan during his tenure with the Rockets. Green shot 61.9 percent from the field against Memphis on October 21st on 21 attempts. He shot 63.6% in the restricted area on 11 attempts per game. Green scored 14 of his 33 points in the restricted area.
The increased aggressiveness contributed to him only taking one pull-up three.
