Klutch Sports Group founder Rich Paul has spent the past year trying to align themselves with San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. Klutch Sports Group began developing a plan to align themselves with Victor Wembanyama in January 2024.

The history between Klutch Sports Group and Victor Wembanyama

Matt Moore of the Action Network reported on January 10, 2024, that Trae Young’s camp would be open to playing with Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio. At the time, Klutch Sports Group represented Trae Young.

Less than a week later, Trae Young publicly stated that the San Antonio Spurs needed to get the ball to Victor Wembanyama more often. On January 15, he told Dennis Scott of TNT that he felt bad for Wembanyama because his teammates ignored him during many offensive possessions.

“Sometimes you feel for him. He had some open looks. Sometimes they don’t get it to him.”

Two days later, Trae Young went on his podcast and stated that Victor Wembanyama had a chance to be the best player ever. Young kept getting mentioned as a potential co-star for Victor Wembanyama until May 2024.

On May 7th, it was announced that Trae Young had terminated his representation contract with Klutch Sports Group to switch to Creative Artists Agency. After Trae Young switched agents, the reports of him being a potential co-star for Victor Wembanyama suddenly stopped.

After Young’s exit from Klutch Sports Group

The agency’s interest in aligning itself with Victor Wembanyama did not stop with Trae Young’s exit. Klutch Sports Group decided to create new rumors about another one of your clients being a potential co-star with Victor Wembanyama.

In May 2024, a report surfaced that Darius Garland would want to leave the organization if the Cavaliers re-signed Donovan Mitchell. Garland reportedly wanted to leave Cleveland because he was unhappy playing alongside Mitchell.

Garland’s preferred destination was the San Antonio Spurs, where he would play alongside Victor Wembanyama. These reports were in the news cycle for two months until Darius denied it.

On July 15, 2024, he admitted that those reports were erroneous, as he never asked for a trade. His decision to officially kill the rumors left the agency without a guard to pair up with Victor Wembanyama.

However, Klutch Sports Group was able to sign De’Aaron Fox to their agency on November 28, 2024. Twenty-four days later, reports surfaced that San Antonio was interested in acquiring Fox from the Sacramento Kings. Those reports have escalated over the past month as the Kings are listening to trade offers for Fox.

Unfortunately, his preferred destination is the San Antonio Spurs. Given the evidence above, it is clear that Klutch Sports Group wants to align itself with Victor Wembanyama.

LeBron James retirement

But the question is, why does Klutch Sports Group want to desperately align itself with him? Well, the answer is that LeBron James has publicly stated that he may only play for 1 or 2 more seasons.

“It’s not me, it’s the mind,” James explained Wednesday night. “Wherever my mind is is how the rest of my body’s gonna go or whatever the case may be. I don’t know, I’m not gonna play that much longer to be completely honest. I don’t know how many years that is, if it’s one year, two years, whatever the case may be.

Consequently, Klutch Sports Group will lose the most marketable player on its client roster. Klutch Sports Group is only representing ten top-tier players, including Anthony Davis, Draymond Green, and Zach Lavine.

Unfortunately, none of these clients have the marketability of James. James is the only client ranked in the top ten in jersey sales this season. NBA.com released a jersey sales list on January 24, which ranked LeBron James second.

Furthermore, James is still one of the league’s biggest ratings draws. On January 25th, the matchup between James’ Lakers and the Golden State Warriors was seen by over 3 million viewers. According to sports media watch, it was the second highest-viewed game outside of Christmas Day.

Therefore, if the agency is unable to sign or is closely associated with a young player who resonates with league officials and basketball fans, its reputation and branding will suffer.

NBA Global Expansion

Victor Wembanyama is a young player who fits the criteria. The league wants to expand its product globally. Adam Silver said on January 23rd that the league is still looking for ways to expand its footprint in Europe.

“We are looking very closely to see if there’s an opportunity to professionalize the game to another level here, to create a larger commercial opportunity,” Silver said. “And not just because commercial opportunity suggests you can grow revenue, but because we believe that with markets, if you can create proper incentives, you can get significant additional investment. And ultimately, that’s the way to grow the game at all levels.”

Silver’s desire to expand the game globally has led the lead to emphasize international stars like Victor Wembanyama. Silver has already stated that Victor Wembanyama has an opportunity to become a global superstar.

Silver: “This is a little different from the old days. I think there was a sense then that there were certain markets you needed to get to. If you really wanted to be a big star because of the nature of the way media works. I don’t think that’s the case anymore… Victor Wembanyama going to San Antonio. Of course, relative to other markets in this league, a smaller market. I don’t think anybody is out there saying there’s a ceiling on Victor Wembanyama’s popularity because he’s playing in San Antonio… He has the opportunity to be a huge global star.”

Consequently, aligning yourself with Victor Wembanyama will give your brand increased visibility to fans around the globe. A bigger audience will increase the likelihood that casual or non-sports fans will remember the player you represent.

Increased popularity will lead to more endorsements and marketing opportunities for your agency and clients.
