The Minnesota Timberwolves are monitoring the point guard trade market, looking for a potential upgrade over Donte DiVincenzo. On November 26, 2025, Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype reported that the team considered pursuing a trade for Ja Morant.

While Edwards and McDaniels are viewed as young pillars for the Timberwolves, Minnesota’s due diligence on Morant signaled the team’s desire to upgrade at point guard and will continue to be on the agenda leading up to the trade deadline, league sources said.

Michael insinuates that Minnesota is interested in Morant because they are looking to increase their distribution production.

While starting guard Donte DiVincenzo has played well, averaging 13.8 points on 38.8 percent shooting from downtown, and Mike Conley is a capable backup point guard, power forward Julius Randle leads the team in assists (5.8).

However, Michael’s opinion is baffling due to Minnesota’s offensive system. Head coach Chris Finch has implemented a ball movement offense over the past five seasons. The team has averaged 284 passes per game, 9th in the league.

Minnesota’s current offense

Chris Finch’s offensive system forces point guards to spend significant time off the ball as floor spacers. On November 19, 2025, Mike Conley received an inbound pass from Julius Randle with eleven minutes left in the first quarter against the Washington Wizards. He dribbled the ball up the left side of the court until he reached the left wing.

Mike then executed a drop-off pass to Donte DiVincenzo. DiVincenzo passed the ball right back to him, leading Conley to pass the ball to Randle immediately. Julius established post position around the left elbow against Keyshawn George. Upon receiving the ball, Randle passed it to Donte, who shifted over to the top of the team.

Donte DiVincenzo ended the possession by making a three-pointer. Chris Finch’s offense has led point guards on the Minnesota roster to take a significant share of their shots from behind the arc.

How Minnesota uses the point guard position

Patrick Beverley was labeled as Minnesota’s starting point guard during the 2021-22 season. Beverley took 55.5% of his shots from behind the arc, averaging 4.2 per game. 64.3% of his three-point attempts were catch-and-shoot, averaging 2.7 per game.

After the 2021-22 season, Minnesota used two players as its starting point guards. Mike Conley and D’Angelo Russell. Both of these players took over 50% of the shots from behind the arc, averaging 5.8 and 7 per game, respectively.  At least 44% of their three-point attempts came via catch-and-shoot.

Mike Conley continued to take most of his shots from behind the arc during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. He averaged 4.9 three-pointers per game, which was 64.3 percent of his shots.

As a result, point guards need to be seen as a floor spacer until Chris Finch exits the franchise. Minnesota is already starting a player at point guard who can thrive in that role.

Donte DiVincenzo is a career 38% three-point shooter on 5.9 attempts per game. 74.6% of his attempts have come from catch-and-shoot situations. He is shooting 37.9% on this type of three on 4.4 attempts.

Donte’s shooting ability has helped the team average 78.6 points, shooting 49% from the field on 56.7 attempts. Over the first 18 games this season, they have outscored opponents by 6.6 points per game during his minutes on the court.

Therefore, Minnesota needs to keep Donte DiVincenzo as the starting point guard until it finds a better shooter. Unfortunately, neither Ja Morant nor Trae Young meets the criteria.

Both players have career 3-point shooting percentages below 35.2% on at least 4.3 attempts per game.
