There is a perception around the league that Portland Trail Blazers forward Toumani Camara is one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA. John Hollinger of The Athletic named Toumani Camara to his first-team All-Defense for the 2025 season.
On April 14, 2025, he stated that Toumani Camara was an elite defender due to his length and tenacity.
“I thought those two were the two most underrated defensive players in the league this year, with huge impact stats for overachieving units. Camara was a committed pain-in-the-tuckus with length and tenacity, one who led the league in offensive fouls drawn and was the go-to stopper for a Portland squad that defended at an elite level in the second half of the season”.
John is not the only media member who believes he is an elite defender. On May 22, 2025, the media voted him onto the second team All-Defense. Although Camara’s All-Defense accolade can never be taken away from him, his defensive reputation is significantly overinflated.
Toumani Camara’s Defensive Strategy and Its Intended Impact
He has developed a defensive strategy centered on ensuring there is limited space between him and his defensive assignment. The strategy has two objectives:
- He wants to make passing the ball to his defensive assignment as hard as possible.
- If his defensive assignment has the ball after an inbound pass, he wants to make sure they pass the ball as quickly as possible.
To ensure maximum success for this strategy, he will take up his defensive assignment in the backcourt. On March 2, 2025, he was guarding Cavaliers point guard Darius Garland from the opening tip. Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen tipped the ball to Evan Mobley to get the first possession of the game.
Evan immediately passed the ball to Garland, hoping it would allow him to bring the ball to the front court and set up the offense. Unfortunately, he was unable to set up the offense as Toumani Camara was a foot away from him when he received the ball. Consequently, he immediately passed the ball to Max Strus, who brought it into the front court.
Max would pass the ball to Evan, who was standing at the top of the key. Mobley immediately looked to pass the ball back to Garland. Unfortunately, Camara had his arms spread laterally to prevent a chest pass or handoff from being completed. Consequently, Evan had to perform a pass over the top of Toumani Camara to get the ball to Garland.
However,Darius Garland once again had to pass the ball quickly because he had limited space. Consequently, he passed the ball to Max, who promptly gave it right back to him. The possession ended when Garland passed the ball to Strus, who had moved to the left wing. Max went on to miss a three-pointer from their left wing.
The Statistical Reality of Camara’s Defensive Impact
Given Camara’s defensive strategy, one would expect him to have phenomenal defensive statistics. Unfortunately, he has below-average defensive statistics throughout his career. Opponents are shooting 51.2% against Camara on 12 attempts per game, an average of 3% higher than their normal field goal percentage.
Camara’s defensive field goal percentage is significantly higher than that of other players who received All-Defense recognition. Since the 2023-24 season, Jaren Jackson Jr, Draymond Green, and OG Anunoby have held opposing players to below 44% shooting on an average of 13.5 attempts per game.
You are most likely asking why there is a significant disparity between his reputation and the defensive statistics. Camara’s defensive strategy begins to break down when he has to deal with multiple dribble moves or multi-man action.
Film Example: Jordan Poole Exposes the Pressure Defense
On February 26, 2025, Toumani Camara was guarding Jordan Poole with 9:40 left in the first quarter. Jordan inbounded the ball to Khris Middleton, who passed it right back to him. Poole received the ball with 23 seconds left on the shot clock and spent five seconds getting the ball past half court due to Camara’s pressure.
After passing half court, he took a false step to the left with his right foot to get Toumani leaning in that direction. Once Camara’s weight was leaning that direction, he took a couple of steps towards the top of the key. At the top of the key, he went over a screen and made an open three-pointer.
Due to these players, Jordan scored 14 points, shooting 55.6% on 9 attempts. Camara’s defensive flaws have contributed to Portland struggling with him on the court. During his 30.2 minutes of game time, opponents are averaging 71.9 points, shooting 47.8% on 53.8 attempts per game.
Although Toumani Camara’s effort is commendable, his defensive strategy makes him a significantly worse defender than his perception suggests.
